Winter 2007 | Washington Seminar 2007
By Pam Allen
This year's Washington seminar was one to remember. Record attendance and important issues made the seminar exciting, and the opportunity to speak with our congressional delegations about matters that will impact our lives as blind people for years to come was exhilarating.
We focused on three issues this year. They were: access to textbooks for blind college students, raising the earnings limits for blind SSDI recipients to encourage work, and preserving the rights of blind people under the Help America Vote Act to cast a secret and independent ballot. Additional information about these issues can be found at the NFB website www.nfb.org.
Blind people from across Louisiana participated in this annual event, and our congressional delegation was generally supportive of the issues we brought to them. Much work needs to be done to insure that these issues are considered as they should be. Members and others who are interested in helping to resolve these problems will receive periodic updates and requests to help as it becomes necessary. If you have questions or need additional information about the progress of these issues, please contact James McCarthy at 410-659-9314, extension 2240. Or send email to jmccarthy@nfb.org.
