By Norma Crosby At the 2006 convention of the National Federation of the Blind, we introduced a new piece of technology that will revolutionize the way blind people deal with printed material. The product is the Kurzweil-National Federation of the Blind Reader (K-NFB Reader), and it utilizes state-of-the-art technology to make printed documents accessible to the blind. The reader uses a digital camera and a powerful personal data assistant, housed in a custom-made case to take snapshots of print data. Once the snapshot has been taken, the reader uses the best available character recognition software and text-to-speech technology to verbalize the content. The reader can be used to read letters, memos, airline tickets, mailing labels, packages and much more. The latest update to the reader allows it to identify U. S. currency.
