Winter 2007 | In Memoriam
In December 31, 2006, Patti McGahan, a longtime Federationist and staff member at the Louisiana Center for the Blind died suddenly, and unexpectedly. Patti's death was due to a massive stroke, and she lost consciousness shortly after arriving at the hospital. We believe and hope that means she did not suffer.
Patti was a friend to many of us. She not only did her work at the Louisiana Center for the Blind with grace and good cheer, but she went the extra mile to see to it that things were done just right. She often worked in the evening and on weekends because of her connection to our fund raising activities around the state. She believed in the work this organization does, and she believed in blind people.
In honor of the work she did during her life and because of her strong commitment to the Louisiana Center for the Blind and the National Federation of the Blind, our board has voted to rename our largest scholarship in her memory. This scholarship, in the amount of $1,500.00 will be awarded in her honor for the first time at the upcoming NFB of Louisiana Convention. The Patti McGahan Memorial Scholarship winner will also receive an expense paid trip that will allow that person to participate in the 2008 Washington Seminar. She would be proud of this honor because both she and her husband Joe shared a strong belief in the importance of education. National Federation of the Blind of Louisiana, Inc.
