Winter 2007 | NFB Newsline®: Growing All the Time

By Susan Clark

Editors Note: Susan Clark is the coordinator of Newsline in Louisiana. She works tirelessly on this and many other NFB of Louisiana Projects.

Today, NFB Newsline® allows blind people throughout Louisiana to access 242 daily newspapers and a variety of magazines. I won't attempt to give you the entire list of papers, but let me tell you that six Louisiana papers are currently available. They are: the Alexandria Daily Town Talk, Baton Rouge Advocate, Monroe News Star, New Orleans Times-Picayune, Opelousas Daily World, and Shreveport Times.

Louisiana subscribers might also want to access material from national papers like: USA Today, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Christian Science Monitor. Newsline is also offering access to several magazines including: The Economist, AARP the Magazine, and Diabetes Self-Management.

The latest addition to the Newsline family of services is television listings. Blind people now have ready access to listings that sighted people have taken for granted for many years. This access allows blind parents to determine which shows may be inappropriate for their children and to plan family viewing accordingly. NFB Newsline® uses the Zap2it television listings, a product of Tribune Media Services. The listings are interactive, and subscribers can check listings no matter where they visit.

Anyone who is legally blind or cannot read printed material due to a physical disability is eligible to apply for the free NFB Newsline® service. If you have not already applied, and would like to take advantage of the outstanding service provided by Newsline, contact me at the Louisiana Center for the Blind. The toll-free number is 800-234-4166. I am available from 8:00am to 5:00pm weekdays to take applications and to answer questions for applicants and current subscribers.
